“187” is the California Penal Code for murder, and when written on a wall traditionally indicates that there is beef (or, a potentially violence feud) between rival gangs, crews, individual graffiti writers, etc. Here is an example of the differing perspectives concerning the gay community among some Los Angeles graffiti writers. The “187 on Gays” was crossed out by the graffiti writer CISCO from CBS (“City Bomb Squad” or “Can’t Be Stopped”) and replaced with “187 on ignorance” as shown in the photo. “Fuck all Tranies” refers to transvestites in the area.

This photo was taken in the Melrose area of Los Angeles in 2008.
